Angular Chelitis, also spelled Angular Cheilitis hurts like crazy because its symptoms are really deep tear-like splits at the corners of the mouth at the lip angles. The mouth corner cracks are extremely hard to get rid of once they are established. In fact, over time, left unchecked, they deepen, get more swollen and sometimes the whole mouth and lip area is involved.
Every time the mouth is opened to take nourishment wether it be liquid or solid, the cracks, which are routinely crusty, tend to open up again and again. Exactly the same problem ocurrs when the mouth is opened during talking, giggling, or smiling. It is hard to imagine dealing with the pain that is involved with each reopening of the mouth.
Yet, the most painful part of Angular Chelitis is the emotional damage it heaps on the sufferer's life. As you can imagine, when people (both friends and strangers), see the ugly mouth corner splits, they are instantly put off, and actually visibly recoil from the sufferer.
